ACLU of Massachusetts legal director Matthew Segal has been elected to the American Law Institute, the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and improve the law.

As legal experts from varying backgrounds, members of the American Law Institute draft, discuss, revise, and publish Restatements of the Law, Model Codes, and Principles of Law that are influential in the courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education.

Matthew Segal joined the ACLU of Massachusetts as legal director in 2012 as an experienced civil rights and appellate litigator. He has litigated significant cases on wrongful convictions, privacy, the criminalization of poverty, the First Amendment, mandatory minimum sentencing, and immigrants’ rights.
