In anticipation of the swearing-in of Maura Healey as Governor of Massachusetts, Carol Rose, Executive Director of the ACLU of Massachusetts, released the following statement:

“The ACLU of Massachusetts congratulates Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll on their historic inauguration. We look forward to working with them, with the cabinet, and with the legislature to make our Commonwealth fairer and more equitable for everyone, and to fulfill the social justice promise of this moment.

“Our nation is in a watershed moment unlike any other in recent history; across the country, our democracy is being tested, with each state determining whether and how to chart a path forward for civil liberties through this fog of anti-democratic extremism. Early steps before the governor’s official swearing-in—like advancing reproductive justice, promoting government transparency, protecting free speech, and securing LGBTQ equality—signal promising new horizons for Massachusetts.”

“We’ve also seen Maura Healey indicate her support for privacy protections that keep pace with technological innovations and her willingness to prioritize public health and harm reduction. We hope to see her exercise leadership as governor to make progress in these critical areas. We have a historic opportunity to secure the essential rights of every person, and Massachusetts has been and can continue to be a leader in promoting civil rights and civil liberties for all.”
