BOSTON — Massachusetts voters expanded access to the ballot box by passing Question 4, bringing Election Day Registration to the state.
The decisive win means that Election Day Registration will take effect across the Commonwealth on Jan. 1, 2028. Eligible citizens will be able to securely register or fix errors in their registration at their precincts on Election Day, with proof of residency and an affidavit of eligibility. This reform will increase voter turnout, strengthen our democracy, and reduce the workload on town clerks by all but eliminating provisional ballots.
The executive committee of the Yes 4 Election Day Registration campaign released the following statement:
“We are thrilled that Massachusetts voters resoundingly support expanding access to the polls for every eligible citizen.
“Election Day Registration is a tried-and-true reform used in nearly two dozen other states. It’s a secure and straightforward way to ensure that every eligible voter can make their voice heard in our democracy by casting a ballot that counts.
“We are eager to work with Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin and clerks across Massachusetts to make sure that Election Day Registration is implemented successfully. Most of all, we look forward to welcoming new voters to the polls in 2028, instead of turning them away because they missed the state’s arbitrary registration deadline.
“We thank everyone who worked for Question 4 and supported it at the polls. Our democracy will be stronger because of this vote.”
The Yes 4 Election Day Registration ballot question committee is a coalition of nonprofit, nonpartisan groups that advocate for voting rights. Members include the ACLU of Massachusetts, Common Cause Massachusetts, League of Women Voters of Massachusetts, MassVOTE, and Mass Voter Table.
