Your glasses shouldn’t know my name.

Tech giant Meta is poised to add facial recognition technology to its AI glasses. This new “name tag” feature would violate everyone’s privacy and liberty.

In recent years, Meta has partnered with eyewear brands Ray-Ban and Oakley to create AI glasses. This mass-market eyewear can connect to the internet and record the wearer’s physical surroundings — including nearby people.

Now, according to an internal company memo leaked to the New York Times, Meta plans to add facial recognition technology to its AI glasses.

This “name tag” feature would let anyone with the glasses covertly identify people around them — at a protest or a medical clinic, on the subway or at a playground. They could then link that name to digital databases containing a wealth of sensitive information on their target’s job, hobbies, health, and relationships.

Stalkers, scam artists, government agents — you name it. Bad actors could use this technology to cause serious harm.

The American people have not consented to this massive invasion of privacy. It’s dangerous and dystopian, and Meta must disavow it.

Today, technology has far outpaced privacy law. Data brokers and Big Tech are free to do almost anything they want with our personal information, including selling our cellphone location data on the open market. These practices endanger all of us, but especially vulnerable communities like immigrants, protesters, and people seeking and providing reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare.
