Since 2019, the ACLU has led a highly successful campaign to pass sensible and long-overdue legislation to regulate face surveillance technology, which is dangerous and racially biased. In 2022, a bipartisan commission endorsed many of our recommendations, and those recommendations have been turned into a new bill that we strongly support.

Now, we need lawmakers to finish what they started in 2022 and pass this crucial legislation.

As your constituent, I ask you to support swift passage of "An Act to Implement the Recommendations of the Special Commission on Facial Recognition Technology" filed by Representatives Orlando Ramos and Dave Rogers, and Senator Creem (S.927/H.1728), which received a favorable report from the Judiciary Committee.

These bills reflect a thoughtful bipartisan collaboration. They would both enable police to use facial recognition technology to investigate serious crimes and guarantee civil rights and due process.

As we continue to see stories of wrongful arrests across the country due to facial recognition technology, it is clear safeguards are needed. Maine and Montana have already passed strong comprehensive laws. Let's ensure Massachusetts is next.
