Summary

The ACLU of Massachusetts (“ACLUM”) seeks a Development Associate to aid the organization in meeting its ambitious fundraising goals, which help power the organization’s legal, legislative and advocacy work. Funding targets are based on programmatic goals in ACLUM’s core issue areas including, voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, immigrants’ rights, criminal justice reform, open government, digital privacy and free speech. The focus of this role is to help process and track donations, conduct research and prospect for new donors, and support the Development team in executing fundraising and other development events. This position will report to and work closely with the Deputy Development Director and other ACLUM departments to achieve development objectives.

Flexibility to accommodate work during evenings and weekends when warranted is an important requirement for this role.

Essential Duties

Database Management and Research

  • Maintain donor and gift information in the donor database.
  • Process and enter gifts in the donor database as they arrive, and send acknowledgements to supporters for gifts received.
  • Generate reports to inform fundraising efforts.
  • Provide input to Finance for weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations and audits.
  • Conduct research and initial prospecting of new donors, and a quarterly portfolio review of new supporters.
  • Research new foundations that may qualify for ACLUM’s grants portfolio.

Development Support

  • Provide administrative support to the Development department including input of contacts and solicitor activity into database, creation and preparation of donor materials for meetings and mailings, drafting of donor communications, and report generation.
  • Work closely with the National ACLU Database Team to generate portfolio, pledge, and financial reports, as needed.
  • Execute all department mailings of donor communications, swag, and fundraising event invitations and information. Liaise with other ACLUM departments and third-party vendors to perform these duties, as applicable.
  • Collaborate with ACLUM colleagues across departments to draft stewardship and cultivation material.
  • Aid the Deputy Director/Chief Development Officer and Deputy Development Director in meeting organizational deadlines for staff-, department- and board-level committee meetings, as well as grant submissions.
  • Monitor and track deadlines to support the department in prioritizing other key tasks and deliverables.

Event Support

  • Work closely with the Donor and Member Officer to support execution of events including donor salons, Amicus luncheons, town halls, Executive Conversations, and the annual ACLUM fundraiser. Related activities include keeping event deadlines, identifying and working with venues and external vendors, mailing invitations and other information, creation of web forms, and management of RSVPs and event-day logistics.
  • Support and help execute additional donor engagement and development events, as applicable.

Other Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Communications Department on donor interface via the ACLUM website and webforms
  • Special projects and other tasks as assigned by the Deputy Development Director.

Qualifications, Experience and Attributes

  • Minimum of two years’ relevant work experience required. Rich experience in nonprofit fundraising strongly preferred.
  • Experience with database management and systems required. Experience with the Salesforce customer relationship management (CRM) platform preferred.
  • Highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Keen attention to detail and high-quality output.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop impactful and informative communications and reports.
