Statement from Norma Shapiro, president of the Council for Fair School Finance, in response to Governor Romney's visit today to Murdock Middle High School in Winchendon

The following is a statement from Norma Shapiro, president of the Council for Fair School Finance, in response to the results released today of Massachusetts students on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) exam. . .

The Commonwealth's Commissioner of Education, David P. Driscoll, is expected to take the stand on Monday, October 27 and will be cross-examined by lead plaintiffs' attorney Michael Weisman.

With over 40 Witnesses, and 300 exhibits the plaintiff's attorneys in the case announced they will wrap-up local district and expert testimony this week in Suffolk Superior Court. They have clearly demonstrated the lack of resources for schools and the fact that the state is taking steps backward.

At a press conference on 9/10/03, teachers, administrators and students shared early evidence that this year is the worst since the Education Reform Act passed--across the Commonwealth--when it comes to class size.

Finance Experts Testify - Jun 27, 2003

Nationally-recognized experts who testified earlier this week and are scheduled to continue testifying on Friday as part of the plaintiff's case in the Hancock v. Driscoll public schools trial have estimated that the state's per pupil foundation level of support is several thousand dollars short of the amount of money needed to provide an adequate education to students, an education that meets the state's constitutional standard.

News reports today indicate that over 6,000 seniors have not passed the math and English sections of the 10th-grade Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System as of December 2002. The December retest was the fourth try to pass the test for many in the class of 2003.
