The ACLU of Massachusetts (“ACLUM”) seeks a full-time advocate to join its Public Advocacy team as a Field Volunteer Coordinator. The focus of this role is to engage with, grow, and coordinate the work of ACLUM’s large and active volunteer base. The scope of responsibilities for this position includes regularly communicating with existing volunteers, identifying and nurturing relationships with potential new volunteers, and mobilizing those individuals to take action in their respective communities. This position will report to the Deputy Field Director for Civic Education and Mobilization and work closely with other ACLUM colleagues as well as community partners to achieve the organization’s advocacy objectives.

This position is based in Boston, MA and requires some travel to various locations across Massachusetts, as well as flexibility to accommodate work outside of regular business hours when warranted.

Essential duties

  • Engage with and nurture ACLUM’s base of activist volunteers, known as the Action Team
  • Partner with the Deputy Field Director for Civic Education and Mobilization to develop and implement volunteer recruitment strategies.
  • Participate in public advocacy campaigns and collaborate with ACLUM colleagues across departments on other volunteer engagement efforts, focusing on how field volunteers can best advance campaign objectives.
  • Define creative ways for volunteers to become involved in ACLUM advocacy efforts, including events, weeks of action, and multimedia story-collection, and collaborate with colleagues across departments to implement these ideas.
  • Match ACLUM staff with volunteers to assist on internal advocacy projects, identifying appropriate roles based on needed skills, interests, and availability.
  • Learn about, stay abreast of, and educate volunteers about ACLUM priority issues.
  • Share regular updates with volunteers about ACLUM work, actions they can take, and new volunteer opportunities.
  • Plan, execute and facilitate regular volunteer days, phone banks, lobby days and other volunteer engagement events, at ACLUM’s office and other venues, as applicable.
  • Organize and host Action Team social gatherings around the state.
  • Partner with the Deputy Field Director for Civic Education and Mobilization to identify and develop leaders among volunteers through educational trainings, skill-building workshops, and ongoing oversight and support.
  • Provide support for ACLUM college and high school chapters.
  • Capture and maintain individual volunteer information, and track engagement and growth in the volunteer database.

Other Responsibilities

Special projects and other tasks as assigned by the Field Director and Deputy Field Director for Civic Education and Mobilization.

Qualifications, Experience and Attributes

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in political science, legal studies, public policy, government relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in volunteer or student coordination, grassroots organizing, or mobilization for issue-based campaigns.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage people with diverse backgrounds and varied levels of experience.
  • Ability to convey complex concepts in simple terms to various audiences.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with others, across departments and areas of expertise.
  • Self-starter, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and capable of working in partnership and independently to get things done.
  • Ability to take comprehensive notes and maintain organized records.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, work well under pressure, and deliver against tight deadlines. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Strong belief in the ACLU’s work and mission to defend and strengthen civil rights and civil liberties.

Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience and consistent with ACLUM’s collective bargaining agreement. Estimated minimum salary of $70,000. Benefits include 401(k) plan, medical and dental insurance, and paid vacation and holidays. Reimbursement for mileage may be provided in accordance with ACLUM policies, when applicable.
